BMW Unveils the All-New X5 (G65) with Five Powertrain Options

BMW has officially revealed the fifth-generation X5, internally known as the G65, marking one of the most significant updates in the model’s history. Built on the brand’s new CLAR II platform, the luxury SUV introduces advanced digital technologies, an entirely redesigned cabin, and an unprecedented range of powertrain options.

For the first time, the BMW X5 will be available with five different propulsion systems, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and a hydrogen-powered version planned for the future. The new generation also debuts BMW’s latest "Heart of Joy" control system, next-generation driver assistance features, and a redesigned exterior that modernizes one of the brand’s best-selling SUVs.

A New Platform for the Next Generation

The G65 X5 is based on BMW's updated CLAR II architecture, which has been engineered to support multiple powertrain technologies without compromising performance or interior space.

This flexible platform allows BMW to manufacture traditional combustion-engine models alongside hybrid, battery-electric, and hydrogen-powered variants using the same underlying architecture. It also integrates the company's latest electronic systems, improving efficiency, driving dynamics, and software capabilities.

Compared with its predecessor, the new X5 grows slightly in size, measuring:

  •
  • Length: 4,994 mm
  • Width: 2,000 mm
  • Height: 1,748 mm
  • Wheelbase: 3,035 mm

The longer wheelbase provides additional passenger space while maintaining the balanced proportions that have defined the X5 since its introduction more than two decades ago.

Exterior Design Evolves Without Losing Identity

Exterior Design Evolves Without Losing Identity

Although instantly recognizable as a BMW X5, the fifth-generation model adopts a cleaner and more futuristic design language inspired by the Neue Klasse family.

The front fascia features slimmer headlights, a redesigned kidney grille, and smoother body surfaces that improve aerodynamic efficiency.

One of the most noticeable changes is the removal of the traditional split tailgate that has been a signature X5 feature for generations. BMW has replaced it with a conventional one-piece rear hatch, simplifying cargo access while increasing luggage capacity.

Another major innovation is the elimination of traditional exterior door handles.

Instead, BMW introduces Winglets—small touch-sensitive elements positioned along the upper edge of each door. Touching these sensors unlocks the vehicle, while optional powered doors can automatically open and close. Soft-close functionality is included as standard equipment.

Customers will be able to choose from eleven exterior paint colors, allowing for extensive personalization.

Five Powertrain Choices

Five Powertrain Choices

The biggest headline surrounding the new X5 is undoubtedly its exceptionally broad range of powertrain options.

BMW will offer the SUV with five different propulsion technologies over its lifecycle, giving buyers more flexibility than ever before.

BMW X5 40 xDrive

The entry-level gasoline model uses a turbocharged 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine producing 400 horsepower.

Designed to balance performance and everyday usability, it delivers strong acceleration while maintaining the refinement expected from BMW's inline-six engines.

BMW X5 40d xDrive

European customers will also have access to a diesel version equipped with BMW's latest mild-hybrid technology.

Its six-cylinder diesel engine produces 313 horsepower, combining excellent long-distance efficiency with substantial low-end torque.

For drivers covering high annual mileage, the diesel remains one of the most economical choices in the lineup.

BMW X5 50e xDrive

The plug-in hybrid variant combines a gasoline engine with an electric motor to deliver a total output of 489 horsepower.

The hybrid system enables short-distance all-electric driving while retaining the flexibility of a conventional combustion engine for longer trips.

This version is expected to appeal to customers seeking lower fuel consumption without fully transitioning to electric mobility.

BMW X5 M60e xDrive

The flagship plug-in hybrid combines a turbocharged 3.0-liter engine with a high-output electric motor.

Together, they generate:

  • 612 horsepower
  • 800 Nm of torque

These figures make it one of the most powerful production X5 models ever built, offering sports-car performance in a luxury SUV package.

The First Fully Electric BMW X5

The First Fully Electric BMW X5

One of the most anticipated additions to the lineup is the all-new iX5 60 xDrive.

The electric SUV adopts BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology, previously introduced on Neue Klasse models.

Key specifications include:

  •
  • Dual-motor all-wheel drive
  • 578 horsepower
  • 141 kWh usable battery capacity
  • 800-volt electrical architecture

The new platform dramatically improves charging performance.

Under ideal conditions, the iX5 supports DC fast charging at up to 460 kW, placing it among the fastest-charging production electric SUVs currently announced.

Although BMW has not yet confirmed official driving range figures, the large battery and advanced powertrain suggest the iX5 will comfortably compete with premium electric SUVs from Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, and Tesla.

Hydrogen Version Coming Later

BMW has also confirmed that the X5 family will eventually include a hydrogen-powered version.

Unlike the battery-electric iX5, this model will generate electricity onboard using a hydrogen fuel-cell system.

Production is expected to begin around 2028, making it the final member of the G65 family.

BMW continues to invest in hydrogen technology as part of its long-term strategy, believing that fuel-cell vehicles may become particularly valuable in markets requiring rapid refueling and extended driving range.

Introducing the "Heart of Joy"

Introducing the "Heart of Joy"

Perhaps the most important technological innovation is BMW's new centralized computing system called Heart of Joy.

Rather than relying on multiple independent electronic control units, the system acts as a central processor responsible for coordinating:

  •
  • Power delivery
  • Transmission operation
  • Braking systems
  • Stability control
  • Regenerative braking
  • Chassis management

BMW describes the system as a "superbrain" capable of processing vehicle data significantly faster than previous architectures.

Originally developed for the Neue Klasse electric vehicles, Heart of Joy now expands to combustion-engine and hybrid models as well.

The centralized approach enables smoother responses, improved efficiency, and more natural driving characteristics.

Advanced Suspension Technology

Advanced Suspension Technology

Every version of the new X5 comes equipped with adaptive suspension as standard.

Buyers can further enhance handling with several optional technologies, including:

  •
  • Air suspension
  • Active anti-roll stabilization
  • Rear-wheel steering
  • Fully adaptive chassis management

Together, these systems improve ride comfort while simultaneously increasing agility during spirited driving.

Rear-wheel steering is particularly beneficial for a vehicle of this size, making low-speed maneuvering easier while increasing stability at highway speeds.

A Completely Redesigned Interior

A Completely Redesigned Interior

Inside, BMW has transformed the cabin with technology borrowed from the latest Neue Klasse models.

The centerpiece is the new Panoramic iDrive display stretching across the base of the windshield, replacing many traditional gauges.

A separate display is integrated into the dashboard for the front passenger, expanding entertainment and navigation capabilities.

The interior adopts a cleaner layout with fewer physical buttons while maintaining BMW's premium material quality and driver-focused ergonomics.

Improved ambient lighting, upgraded connectivity, and enhanced digital services contribute to a more modern cabin experience.

Hands-Free Driving Gets Smarter

BMW has significantly expanded the X5's driver assistance capabilities.

The new Motorway & City assistance package allows completely hands-free driving at speeds of up to 130 km/h under suitable conditions.

One particularly innovative feature is lane changing by eye movement.

Instead of requiring the driver to press a button, the system monitors eye movements. When the driver looks into the appropriate side mirror and traffic conditions are safe, the vehicle interprets the glance as confirmation and automatically performs the lane change.

This technology represents another step toward increasingly natural human-machine interaction.

Production and Availability

Production of the new BMW X5 will begin in August at BMW's Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, the company's global center for X-series SUV manufacturing.

Initial production will focus on gasoline and diesel models, while plug-in hybrid and fully electric variants are scheduled to enter production early next year.

European customers can already order the X5 40 xDrive and X5 40d xDrive.

Orders for the X5 50e xDrive, X5 M60e xDrive, and iX5 60 xDrive will open on October 8.
