Xpeng P7+ Will Be Updated and Become a Hybrid: First Official Photos

The Chinese automaker XPeng has officially confirmed major changes for its flagship liftback Xpeng P7+, which entered the domestic Chinese market in November last year. The model is preparing for a deep update that goes far beyond a traditional facelift. The exterior design, interior layout, electronic architecture, and most importantly the powertrain lineup will all be revised. For the first time, the P7+ will receive a hybrid version, which promises a record-breaking electric-only driving range for its class.

Sales of the updated P7+ family are expected to begin during 2026, with the model also targeting a wide international rollout.

According to XPeng, more than one hundred engineering improvements will be introduced in the updated P7+. Around 35 percent of the vehicle’s components and systems will be revised or redesigned. While the company has not yet disclosed full technical documentation, several key exterior changes have already been confirmed.

The liftback will feature new lighting technology with redesigned headlamps and rear light signatures. These updates are expected to improve both visibility and brand recognition. XPeng has also worked on revised aerodynamic elements, including reshaped bumpers and optimized airflow components, aimed at reducing drag and improving overall efficiency. These changes are particularly important for the hybrid version, where aerodynamics directly affect electric driving range.

Interior and Digital Architecture Upgrades

Inside the cabin, XPeng is focusing heavily on electronics and software. The updated P7+ will use more powerful onboard processors to support advanced driver-assistance systems, infotainment functions, and vehicle connectivity. Although interior images are limited at this stage, the brand confirms improvements in responsiveness, system stability, and AI-based features.

Material quality and ergonomics are also expected to be enhanced, aligning the P7+ more closely with premium electric and hybrid competitors in both the Chinese and global markets.

Hybrid Powertrain: Technical Specifications

The most significant update is the introduction of a new hybrid powertrain. Certification data has already revealed the key technical specifications of the upcoming hybrid Xpeng P7+.

The system consists of a 1.5-liter gasoline engine producing 150 horsepower, paired with an electric motor rated at 245 horsepower. Energy storage is provided by a 49.2 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This configuration allows the liftback to operate as an extended-range hybrid, prioritizing electric driving for daily use.

Record Electric Range and Total Driving Distance

Record Electric Range and Total Driving Distance

XPeng claims that the hybrid P7+ will deliver up to 430 kilometers of pure electric driving range. This figure is exceptional for the segment and positions the model among the longest-range plug-in hybrids currently announced.

When combining battery power and fuel capacity, the total driving range reaches approximately 1,550 kilometers. This is more than double the range of the longest-range fully electric version of the current P7+. Such performance addresses one of the key concerns of global buyers: long-distance usability without frequent charging stops.

Market Performance and Strategic Shift

Despite a relatively strong market debut, demand for the fully electric P7+ has gradually declined. According to industry data cited by Chinese media, sales dropped to just 4,870 units in November, which is considered low by current Chinese market standards.

XPeng views the hybrid version and comprehensive facelift as critical steps to revive demand. Expanding the powertrain lineup allows the brand to attract customers who are not yet ready to transition fully to battery-electric vehicles, especially in regions with limited charging infrastructure.

Global Expansion Plans for 2026

Another key factor behind the update is XPeng’s aggressive global expansion strategy. The company plans to launch the updated P7+ in 36 countries outside China during 2026. Hybrid technology plays a crucial role in this plan, as many international markets still favor electrified vehicles with internal combustion engines over pure EVs.

By offering both electric and hybrid versions, XPeng aims to position the P7+ as a versatile global product capable of competing with established brands in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific.

The P7+ is not the only model undergoing this transformation. In November, XPeng introduced a hybrid version of its X9 van at the Guangzhou Auto Show. The hybrid X9 officially offers a total driving range of 1,602 kilometers, reinforcing the company’s commitment to extended-range hybrid technology as a bridge between combustion engines and full electrification.

What This Means for the UAE and Rental Market

For markets like the UAE, where long distances and high temperatures play a crucial role in vehicle choice, the hybrid Xpeng P7+ could become a highly attractive option. A long electric range combined with fuel backup aligns well with regional driving conditions, making the model interesting not only for private buyers but also for premium car rental fleets.
