Updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class Gets a Flat-Plane V8 and Smarter Suspension
The refreshed Mercedes-Benz S-Class is preparing for its official debut at the end of January, and early details suggest that the flagship sedan is entering one of the most interesting phases of its evolution. According to Car and Driver, journalists have already driven a pre-production prototype, revealing key technical changes that go far beyond a simple facelift.
The updated S-Class will arrive with a revised engine lineup, mandatory all-wheel drive, a nine-speed automatic transmission across the range, a brand-new intelligent suspension system called iDamping, and, most notably, a new V8 engine with a flat-plane crankshaft. This move signals a strategic shift for Mercedes-Benz as it gradually retires traditional large-displacement engines in favor of more advanced, efficient, and technologically complex powertrains.

Powertrain Strategy: Hybrid Focus with a New V8 Flagship
At launch, the refreshed Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be offered exclusively with electrified powertrains. Mercedes-Benz is clearly positioning the S-Class as a technological benchmark, where efficiency, performance, and refinement coexist rather than compete.
The entry point into the lineup will be the S500 mild hybrid. This version uses a 3.0-liter inline-six petrol engine paired with a 48-volt electrical system. Output has been significantly increased from 367 horsepower to 449 horsepower, while peak torque reaches 600 Nm. The mild-hybrid setup improves throttle response, reduces fuel consumption, and allows smoother operation in urban driving, which is particularly relevant for premium chauffeur-driven sedans.
Above it sits the S580e plug-in hybrid, which combines the same inline-six engine with a more powerful electric motor rated at 163 horsepower. Previously
limited to 150 horsepower, the upgraded motor pushes the system’s combined output to 585 horsepower. This configuration is designed to deliver silent electric driving for city use while maintaining long-distance comfort and strong performance on highways.
Flat-Plane Crankshaft V8: A New Era for the S-Class
The most intriguing variant in the non-AMG lineup is the S580 without an electric motor. Instead of electrification, it introduces a completely reworked 4.0-liter V8 engine from the M177 family, now featuring a flat-plane crankshaft. This is the first time such a crankshaft design has been used in a standard S-Class.
Traditionally associated with high-performance sports cars, a flat-plane crankshaft allows for faster engine response, higher rev limits, and a more aggressive exhaust note. In this configuration, the V8 produces 537 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque. Mercedes-Benz expects the sedan to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately four seconds, which is remarkable for a luxury four-door of this size.
In the European market, this V8 is widely expected to replace the outgoing V12 engine. While official confirmation has not yet been given, industry insiders suggest that the legendary twelve-cylinder may survive only in limited markets or potentially return as part of a hybrid system.
iDamping: Suspension That Learns from the Road
Another major innovation debuting with the facelifted S-Class is the iDamping suspension system. This technology takes adaptive suspension to an entirely new level by leveraging cloud-based data sharing between vehicles.
Each S-Class equipped with iDamping continuously analyzes road surface conditions, detecting bumps, potholes, and irregularities. This information is then uploaded to a shared cloud database. Other S-Class vehicles approaching the same stretch of road can access this data in advance, allowing their suspension systems to pre-adjust damping settings before encountering imperfections.
In real-world terms, this means a smoother ride, reduced body movement, and enhanced comfort regardless of road quality. Over time, as more vehicles contribute data, the system becomes increasingly precise, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz’s vision of connected luxury.

Exterior Updates: Evolution Rather Than Revolution
Visually, the facelifted S-Class remains intentionally conservative. Mercedes-Benz has opted for subtle refinements rather than dramatic redesigns, ensuring that the car retains its timeless presence.
The most noticeable changes include updated headlights featuring three-pointed star-shaped light signatures inspired by the latest CLA design language. The radiator grille has been revised with a more refined pattern, while the front and rear bumpers receive minor reshaping to improve aerodynamics and visual balance.
These updates are carefully executed to modernize the sedan without alienating traditional S-Class buyers who value elegance over flamboyance.
Interior Expectations and the Hyperscreen Upgrade
While Mercedes-Benz has not officially revealed interior details, spy photos taken in December indicate a major digital upgrade. The vertical central display currently used in the S-Class is expected to be replaced by the expansive Hyperscreen system.
This wide, curved display spans much of the dashboard and integrates the digital instrument cluster, infotainment system, and passenger display into a single glass surface. Already seen in other high-end Mercedes models, Hyperscreen offers improved graphics, faster response times, and deeper integration with vehicle systems, reinforcing the S-Class’s role as a technological showcase.

Technical Specifications Overview
The updated Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be offered exclusively with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive across all variants. Key technical highlights include multiple levels of hybridization, advanced suspension electronics, and enhanced engine performance without compromising comfort or refinement.
The combination of electrified inline-six engines, a flat-plane V8, and intelligent chassis systems positions the refreshed S-Class as one of the most advanced luxury sedans on the global market.
For markets like Dubai and Abu Dhabi, where premium sedans are popular both for business travel and luxury experiences, the updated S-Class strengthens Mercedes-Benz’s appeal in the high-end rental segment. Clients increasingly expect cutting-edge technology, smooth performance, and brand prestige, all of which the new S-Class delivers in abundance.
As electrified powertrains and advanced comfort systems become more desirable, this facelifted model is likely to be in strong demand among customers seeking a flagship luxury sedan in the UAE.
