Rare BMW 2002te With a Tesla Motor Hits the Auction Block

Rare BMW 2002te With a Tesla Motor Hits the Auction Block

The BMW 2002 has always been one of the most influential models in the brand’s history — a lightweight, driver-focused coupe that helped establish BMW’s modern performance identity. Today, restomod culture keeps these classics alive, and the latest creation from Munich-based Bavarian Econs takes the idea of electrification to a new level. Their BMW 2002te, originally built as a 1972 model, has been completely transformed into a fully electric showpiece. Now listed on Bring a Trailer, this one-of-a-kind EV is attracting serious attention, reaching around 55,000 dollars with several days left before bidding closes.

Bavarian Econs approached the project with a clear goal — to merge classic design with modern, eco-friendly power. The original petrol engine was replaced by a compact electric motor sourced from a Tesla Model S. Although it’s not the full-size high-output unit from Tesla’s flagship sedan, this specific motor still produces around 180 horsepower, which is a substantial upgrade over anything the 2002 ever had from the factory.

Paired with this motor is a 33-kWh battery pack borrowed from the BMW i3. This lightweight yet capable battery aligns perfectly with the philosophy of the original 2002 — minimal mass and maximum driving pleasure. Thanks to the combination of Tesla power and BMW EV technology, the converted 2002te can cover roughly 200 kilometers on a single charge. Acceleration is equally impressive: the coupe sprints from zero to 100 km/h in just 6.2 seconds, making it quicker than many modern compact cars.

To handle the added torque and instant response of an electric powertrain, Bavarian Econs re-engineered key elements of the suspension system. The 2002te features KW Racing V3 Classic coilovers, providing a far more controlled and modern driving feel compared to the original setup. Interestingly, the workshop decided to retain the factory brake system, trusting the inherent lightness of the car and the efficiency of regenerative braking to maintain safe stopping performance.

Completing the exterior look are 13-inch Alpina wheels, a nod to BMW’s performance heritage. They help preserve the vintage aesthetic while supporting the modernized driving dynamics.

Inside, the transformation continues with a subtle but premium mix of old and new. The seats have been replaced with modern sport seats upholstered in a blend of leather and fabric, ensuring both comfort and support. A retro-style air conditioning system brings everyday usability, while a hidden eight-speaker audio setup with a subwoofer delivers high-quality sound without disrupting the vintage cabin design. Bluetooth connectivity ensures seamless pairing with contemporary devices.

Despite being over half a century old, the base vehicle had only around 31,000 kilometers on the odometer before its EV conversion. After the transformation, it has been driven an additional 2,400 kilometers, mostly during exhibition appearances in Europe and the United States.

A Rare Opportunity for Collectors

Classic-to-electric conversions are gaining popularity worldwide, but few are as refined and balanced as the Bavarian Econs BMW 2002te. With its lightweight chassis, improved handling, and modern EV performance, this car represents a bridge between automotive eras. Pristine classic BMW values continue to rise, and unique electric restomods are becoming coveted collector items.

This BMW 2002te stands not only as a tribute to engineering creativity but also as a practical EV that can be driven daily, offering zero-emission motoring without sacrificing classic charm. For enthusiasts looking to own a conversation-starter that blends heritage with innovation, this auction could be the perfect opportunity.

EV Restomod Trend Continues to Grow

This trend is spreading across the industry. Earlier this year, a fully electrified Rolls-Royce Corniche appeared in the UK, equipped with a 500-horsepower powertrain and a modern chassis, with prices expected to start at around 560,000 dollars. As environmental awareness continues to reshape automotive culture, conversions like the 2002te will likely become even more significant within the collector community.

Maserati has revised the gasoline-powered lineup of the Grecale crossover, making a notable strategic move by abandoning the entry-level turbocharged four-cylinder engine in favor of a V6 across all combustion versions. As a result, the most affordable Maserati Grecale is now significantly more powerful, while the former base version quietly disappears from the configuration list.
