Peugeot Updates the 308 Hatchback and Station Wagon: Key Changes in 2025

Peugeot has officially unveiled the refreshed version of its popular 308 family, available as both a hatchback and a station wagon. With this mid-cycle facelift, the French automaker introduces not only cosmetic updates but also significant technical improvements, especially in hybrid and electric variants. The update enhances efficiency, increases electric range, and adds a new transmission that promises a smoother, more responsive driving experience.

Exterior Design Changes

The facelift brings a sharper and more modern look to the Peugeot 308, focusing mainly on the front fascia.

The LED headlights no longer feature Peugeot’s iconic “fang” daytime running lights, opting instead for a sleeker horizontal design.

A frameless grille now dominates the front end, incorporating illuminated details in the upper section for a futuristic look.

On premium trims, the Peugeot emblem itself is illuminated, a design element usually reserved for luxury segments.

At the rear, the design remains largely unchanged, though Peugeot updated the digital graphics of the taillights to match its latest design language.

Inside, the cabin layout carries over with subtle refinements, including new instrument cluster graphics and updated infotainment software.

Powertrain Options: Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric

Powertrain Options: Diesel, Hybrid, and Electric

The updated Peugeot 308 will launch in Europe in autumn 2025 with multiple powertrain choices:

1. Diesel

Engine: 1.5-liter BlueHDi diesel

Power: 130 hp

Transmission: 8-speed automatic (manual gearbox is no longer offered)

Target audience: fleet customers and long-distance drivers

2. Hybrid Powertrains

Peugeot offers two plug-in hybrid variants, both combining a petrol engine with electric assistance.

Hybrid 145

  • Engine: 1.2-liter turbo petrol + 48V electric motor
  • Total output: 145 hp
  • Transmission: 7-speed dual-clutch automatic
  • Efficiency: Designed for urban commuters with short EV driving bursts

Hybrid 195 (major update)

  • Engine: 1.6-liter turbo petrol + electric motor
  • Total output: 195 hp (+15 hp compared to the previous version)
  • Battery: 17.2 kWh (up from 12.4 kWh)
  • EV Range: 85 km (WLTP)

Transmission: brand-new 7-speed dual-clutch “robotized” gearbox, replacing the older 8-speed torque-converter automatic

This new hybrid setup offers better responsiveness, extended EV driving range, and improved overall efficiency.

3. Fully Electric E-308

The electric variant receives the most noticeable boost in range and usability:

Motor: 156 hp electric motor

Battery: 58.4 kWh, 400V architecture

Range: 450 km (WLTP), up from 415 km

Charging: 20–80% in approx. 30–35 minutes using fast charging

Performance: Front-wheel drive layout, suitable for daily commuting and longer journeys

Return of the Peugeot GTi Spirit

Earlier this year, Peugeot also reintroduced its GTi performance sub-brand. The first model is the electric Peugeot 208 GTi:

Power: 280 hp electric motor

Acceleration: 0–100 km/h in 5.7 seconds

Top speed: 180 km/h

Drivetrain: Front-wheel drive

While this hot hatch sits outside the 308 lineup, its debut highlights Peugeot’s ambition to mix driving pleasure with electrification. The 308 could be the next model to receive a GTi-style performance trim.

Driving Experience and Market Position

Driving Experience and Market Position

With this update, the Peugeot 308 competes directly with Volkswagen Golf, Ford Focus, and Renault Mégane in the compact segment. The E-308 now has a more competitive range, while the Hybrid 195 targets customers who want flexibility: EV driving during the week and petrol assistance on longer trips.

The new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission ensures faster shifts and reduces energy losses, offering a sportier feel compared to the previous 8-speed automatic.

Why the 2025 Peugeot 308 Matters for Dubai and the UAE

Why the 2025 Peugeot 308 Matters for Dubai and the UAE

Although the Peugeot 308 is primarily targeted at the European market, its combination of hybrid and electric optionsmakes it highly relevant for eco-conscious customers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The UAE is investing heavily in EV charging infrastructure, and models like the E-308 with 450 km range can easily integrate into daily urban commuting as well as inter-city travel.

For residents and tourists, renting or leasing compact hybrids and EVs is becoming more attractive due to lower running costs, free parking incentives in some emirates, and reduced environmental impact.
