Mercedes-Benz and Momenta to Launch Level-4 Robotaxi Service in the UAE

The UAE continues to position itself as a global leader in smart transportation, and the latest announcement from Mercedes-Benz confirms this trajectory. The German automaker will launch its first robotaxi program in Abu Dhabi in partnership with Chinese autonomous-driving specialist Momenta Global. The project will use the new-generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class as the carrier vehicle, equipped with a Level-4 automated driving system and powered by the brand’s next-generation operating software, Mercedes-Benz MB.OS.

The commercial debut is expected shortly after the updated S-Class premieres in January, marking the first time Mercedes deploys its flagship sedan in a fully driverless commercial environment.

Why the S-Class is Ideal for a Robotaxi Platform

The S-Class has traditionally served as Mercedes-Benz’s most advanced technological showcase, and the robotaxi version continues that tradition. The Level-4 autonomous package integrates multi-sensor fusion, combining high-resolution lidar, long-range radar modules, short-range ultrasonic sensors and 360° camera vision. This setup enables precise environment mapping, autonomous lane changes, object prediction and self-navigation in complex traffic.

Technically, the refreshed S-Class remains rooted in Mercedes’ MRA II architecture. Powertrain choices are expected to mirror the current lineup, including a 3.0-liter inline-six and a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with mild-hybrid support. While the robotaxi configuration will not rely on high performance, these engines ensure smooth operation for climate control, electrical systems and onboard computing, which significantly increases energy demand.

Key onboard hardware is controlled through MB.OS, a platform designed to centralize computing and allow third-party developers to build modules on top of the system without compromising Mercedes’ core software integrity.

Level-4 Autonomy and What It Means for Passengers

Level-4 Autonomy and What It Means for Passengers

Level-4 autonomous driving allows complete hands-off operation in most urban environments. Once active, the vehicle can navigate traffic, react to unpredictable scenarios and complete journeys without driver involvement. Human input is limited to initiating or cancelling the ride.

In Abu Dhabi, the rollout will be facilitated by Lumo Mobility, a local operator that already holds authorization to test and deploy autonomous vehicles across the emirate. With its support, S-Class robotaxis will operate similarly to existing ride-hailing platforms, though entirely without in-cabin safety operators.

Mercedes’ system uses real-time data processing, HD mapping, redundancy in braking and steering systems, and continuous over-the-air updates. These features allow the sedan to make safe, predictable decisions even in dense traffic or rapidly changing road conditions, which is essential in the UAE’s diverse driving environment.

Momenta Global: China’s Rising Autonomous Tech Power

While Mercedes provides hardware and system architecture, Momenta Global delivers the advanced driver-assistance intelligence. Founded in 2016, Momenta has become one of China’s leading autonomous software developers. The company already supplies self-driving systems for BMW in China, where its technology supports a broad range of automated functions.

Momenta’s roadmap includes a robotaxi collaboration with Uber in Germany from 2026, demonstrating the company’s international ambitions and ability to meet high regulatory and safety standards across markets.

Abu Dhabi Emerges as a Global Hub for Autonomous Mobility

Autonomous mobility has developed rapidly in the UAE, fueled by progressive regulation and strategic partnerships. The introduction of Mercedes-Benz robotaxis follows Uber’s November announcement of its first fully driverless service in Abu Dhabi, operated with Chinese firm WeRide. These vehicles run without safety drivers, marking one of the world’s first commercial deployments of passenger-only robotaxis.

With multiple global players entering the market, Abu Dhabi is becoming a real-world testbed for the technologies that will shape future urban mobility. The presence of high-end brands such as Mercedes further elevates the ecosystem, offering premium comfort and sophisticated engineering in an entirely driverless context.

What This Means for UAE Customers and Visitors

For residents and travelers, the arrival of the S-Class robotaxi promises new levels of convenience. The car will deliver the luxury atmosphere associated with Mercedes’ flagship sedan while removing the human driver entirely. Features such as executive rear seating, cabin noise insulation, climate-controlled comfort and advanced infotainment will elevate the robotaxi experience far above what is typically associated with ride-hailing services.

The system may eventually integrate with mobility platforms in Abu Dhabi, allowing passengers to order autonomous rides via app interfaces similar to existing services. As the UAE continues expanding its smart mobility programs, demand for autonomous transportation is expected to rise sharply.

Outlook for Mercedes and the Future of Robotaxi Technology

The Abu Dhabi project is a strategic turning point for Mercedes-Benz. By joining forces with Momenta Global and deploying MB.OS-powered automation, the company enters a competitive, fast-growing sector dominated by American and Chinese players. The S-Class robotaxi will serve as Mercedes’ first real-world validation of Level-4 automation on a commercial scale.

If successful, the technology could expand to other Gulf countries and major European cities, aligning with the brand’s long-term vision of integrating software-defined architecture across its entire lineup.
