Mercedes-AMG GT XX Achieves Record-Breaking 1041 kW Charging Speed
The future of electric mobility just got closer. Mercedes-Benz has once again set a new benchmark in the EV world with the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept, which has achieved a record-breaking 1041 kW charging rate. This makes it one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles ever tested, showing what the next generation of electric driving could look like in the UAE, Europe, and beyond.
Charging at Over 1 Megawatt
During a public demonstration in collaboration with Alpitronic, a leading Italian charging infrastructure manufacturer, the GT XX connected to an experimental ultra-fast charger and reached a peak power of 1041 kW in less than one second. Even more impressive, it managed to maintain this level for 2.5 minutes.
To put this into perspective, most of today’s top-tier EVs—including models from Tesla, Porsche, and BMW—charge at speeds between 250 kW and 400 kW. The leap to over 1 megawatt highlights how Mercedes-Benz is pushing boundaries far beyond what’s available on the market today.

The Technology Behind the Record
Several innovations allowed the Mercedes-AMG GT XX to achieve this feat:
Next-Generation Alpitronic Charger: Specially engineered with an output capacity of more than 800 kW, capable of delivering up to 1176 amps through a reinforced CCS cable.
Advanced Cooling System: The GT XX features an experimental battery with an upgraded thermal management system, designed to handle extreme charging currents without overheating.
High-Efficiency Energy Transfer: In just one minute, the GT XX absorbed 17.3 kWh of energy, equal to about 128 km of WLTP range or 100 km under EPA standards.
These numbers bring EV charging times closer to what drivers expect from traditional refueling—something especially important in markets like Dubai, where convenience and speed are paramount.

What It Means for Everyday Drivers
Mercedes-Benz plans to integrate this breakthrough technology into production EVs starting in 2026. That means customers won’t have to wait long before experiencing charging sessions that take just a few minutes instead of half an hour or more.
To support these advancements, Mercedes-Benz is partnering with Alpitronic to roll out a global charging network. By the end of the decade, this network is expected to include 10,000 charging stations, each with multiple high-power connectors. Unlike some proprietary networks, Mercedes will allow all EV brands to use these chargers, making them as universal as today’s fuel stations.
For example, a Mercedes-Benz CLA electric sedan could gain up to 325 km of range in a 10-minute charging session, nearly matching the time it takes to fill up a petrol car.
A Record-Breaker Beyond Charging
The GT XX isn’t only rewriting the rules for charging. This experimental EV has already set more than 25 world records, including:
- Driving 40,075 km in eight days—the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe along the equator.
- Beating XPeng’s endurance record by covering 5479 km in 24 hours of nearly non-stop driving.
These achievements position Mercedes-AMG not just as a luxury performance brand, but as a technological leader in electric mobility.
The Impact on EV Adoption in Dubai and the UAE
With the UAE investing heavily in EV infrastructure, breakthroughs like the GT XX’s 1041 kW charging record could play a pivotal role in local adoption. Dubai’s EV strategy aims to expand the charging network rapidly, and ultra-fast chargers will make it easier for residents and tourists alike to choose electric rentals over traditional cars.
At RentCarUAE, the growing fleet of electric cars for rent in Dubai already offers models from Tesla, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz. As new ultra-fast charging technology rolls out, renting an EV will become even more convenient, eliminating range anxiety and long charging times.

A Future Where Charging Is as Fast as Refueling
The Mercedes-AMG GT XX demonstrates that the day when EVs can recharge as quickly as filling a petrol tank is almost here. With 1 MW charging, new infrastructure partnerships, and mass-market rollout in 2026, Mercedes-Benz is bringing drivers closer to a world where electric mobility is faster, cleaner, and more practical than ever before.
For Dubai and the UAE, this means more choices, better infrastructure, and an exciting new era of driving.
