Mazda to Launch New Rotary Sports Car in 2026
Mazda is bringing back the rotary engine in a bold way. The Japanese automaker has confirmed that a brand-new sports car powered by a rotary engine is currently in development and is expected to debut in 2026. While the final production plan is still being finalized, the technical direction and design inspiration are already set — and they’re heavily influenced by the Iconic SP concept, which made headlines in 2023.
Rotary Revival – But With a Twist
According to Mazda’s Chief Technical Officer, Ryuichi Umeshita, the upcoming model will pay homage to the legendary RX-7, but won’t simply copy it. Instead of a pure internal combustion platform, the new vehicle will feature a rotary-based hybrid powertrain, with one configuration allowing the rotary engine to directly power the wheels — unlike the Iconic SP, where the engine only recharged the battery.
This hybrid flexibility means Mazda could technically release a fully electric version, but Umeshita made it clear that there are no such plans for now. Mazda aims to offer a unique driving experience that combines traditional rotary dynamics with modern electrification.
Not RX-9 – A New Name in the Making
Although the upcoming sports car is a spiritual successor to the RX-series, it will not be called RX-9. Mazda has no intention of following a strict naming legacy. Instead, the brand may introduce an entirely new name or revive a historic badge — but not Cosmo, the name used for Mazda’s first-ever rotary vehicle.
This decision reflects Mazda’s desire to define a fresh identity for its next-generation sports car, without confining it to past expectations.
A Niche Model, Not a Mass Production Car
Mazda made it clear that this new rotary sports car will be low-volume, targeted at enthusiasts and collectors. It is not meant to replace or compete with the Mazda MX-5 Miata, which remains the company’s best-selling performance car globally.
Rather, this rotary-powered coupe will complement the MX-5, expanding Mazda’s sporty lineup with a more futuristic, high-performance sibling.
Next-Gen Mazda MX-5 Is Also in the Works
While the rotary sports car is expected by 2026, Mazda is also preparing the next generation of the MX-5, although it won’t arrive before 2027. The beloved roadster, now over a decade old, will undergo a full model change — but without dramatic changes in size or proportions.
However, the design will draw inspiration from the Iconic SP, adding sharper lines and a more modern aesthetic. The biggest change will be under the hood: Mazda is developing a new Skyactiv-Z engine, a lightweight, highly efficient powerplant designed for the next generation of small sports cars. This engine will likely debut with the next-gen MX-5.
