Freelander Brand Reveals New Crossover with First Photos
The Freelander brand, revived in China through a partnership between Land Rover and Chery, has released the first set of photos of its debut model — a serial crossover that is still unnamed. This vehicle will be the production version of the Concept 97 prototype, which was revealed in late March, and is expected to go on sale in the second half of the year.
Design Features and Connection to the Original Freelander
From the photos, it’s clear that the production version of the Freelander crossover will retain many of the design elements first shown on the Concept 97. These design cues are meant to link the new vehicle to the original Land Rover Freelander, and they include complex lighting, a sculpted hood, sharp body contours, and rear pillars with a backward lean. Notably, while the prototype featured rear doors that opened in the opposite direction of traditional vehicles, the production model will adopt a more conventional door-opening solution.
New Platform and Powertrain Options
The Freelander crossover will be built on a new platform designed to support both hybrid and fully electric powertrains. This marks an important step in the brand's push toward sustainability and advanced automotive technologies. The platform is expected to provide a solid foundation for multiple vehicle types within the Freelander lineup, ensuring the brand's ability to cater to a variety of customer preferences in terms of powertrains.
Technology Contributions from Qualcomm and Huawei
As part of the development of the debut crossover, Qualcomm and Huawei are playing significant roles in the creation of the vehicle’s driving electronics. Huawei, in particular, will contribute to the integration of a comprehensive suite of driver-assist systems. These systems aim to enhance driver safety, convenience, and overall driving experience.
