Rivian R2 Introduces AI-Powered Cabin Camera for Pet Monitoring
Rivian has revealed two innovative features for its upcoming R2 electric vehicle, including a unique AI-powered cabin camera designed specifically for pet monitoring.
The new system works alongside Rivian’s existing Pet Mode, which keeps the climate control running after the vehicle is locked to maintain a comfortable temperature for animals left inside. Owners can now remotely view their pets through a cabin camera integrated into the rearview mirror and accessible via the Rivian smartphone app.
What makes the feature unique is its privacy-focused artificial intelligence. The system can distinguish between pets and people. If a dog or cat is detected, the live video feed becomes available. However, if the AI identifies a human inside the vehicle, remote viewing is automatically disabled to protect privacy. An indicator on the vehicle’s display also informs occupants when the camera is active.
Rivian has also introduced a cleverly designed rear windshield wiper for the R2. To preserve the crossover’s clean exterior styling, engineers integrated the wiper into the rear spoiler, where it remains completely hidden when not in use.
According to the company, both features have undergone extensive testing and are ready for real-world use. The AI-enabled pet monitoring system highlights Rivian’s focus on combining advanced technology, convenience, and privacy in its next generation of electric vehicles.
