Michelin has officially turned one of the most interesting technologies from the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept into a commercial product. The French tyre maker has launched two new energy-focused summer tyres, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy and the Michelin Primacy 5 Energy, both designed to improve efficiency without sacrificing everyday usability. According to Michelin, these new tyres can increase the driving range of an electric car by up to 10 percent, while the Primacy 5 Energy can add up to 70 km of extra range per charge in some applications.
That claim matters because tyres have become one of the key battlegrounds in the EV era. Electric cars are heavier than comparable ICE models, they deliver instant torque, and buyers are highly sensitive to range figures. In that environment, even a modest reduction in rolling resistance can have a meaningful effect on real-world usability. During record testing at Nardo in Italy, the concept covered 5,479 km in 24 hours and completed 40,075 km in 7 days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and 7 seconds, effectively matching the Earth’s circumference at the equator. Michelin claims that the Primacy 5 Energy can deliver up to 6 percent fuel savings, up to 10 percent more EV range, up to €169 in fuel savings over the tyre’s life, and up to 70 km of additional range per charge for a car. The company also says the tyre offers an 8 percent improvement in wet braking performance, both when new and when worn, and positions it as the leader in longevity among premium summer tyres in its category.
For daily drivers, this tyre may prove even more important than the sportier Pilot Sport 5 Energy. Most EV owners are not chasing lap times. They want lower charging frequency, lower cabin noise, predictable wet-weather safety, and tyres that last. The Primacy 5 Energy is clearly built around those priorities.
Technical specifications and available sizes
From a specification perspective, the launch covers a broad section of the market. Michelin states that the Primacy 5 Energy was launched with 33 sizes from 16 to 19 inches at the start of 2026, while the Middle East product pages currently show 69 available sizes extending further across the catalogue. The Pilot Sport 5 Energy product page lists 30 sizes available, with fitments spanning 18 to 24 inches in the current range display.
The original tyres used on the AMG GT XX concept were even more specific. Michelin says the concept car ran 265/40 ZR20 107Y XL MO1 tyres at the front and 295/40 ZR20 113Y XL MO1 at the rear.
