Michelin has officially turned one of the most interesting technologies from the Mercedes-AMG GT XX concept into a commercial product. The French tyre maker has launched two new energy-focused summer tyres, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy and the Michelin Primacy 5 Energy, both designed to improve efficiency without sacrificing everyday usability. According to Michelin, these new tyres can increase the driving range of an electric car by up to 10 percent, while the Primacy 5 Energy can add up to 70 km of extra range per charge in some applications.

 

That claim matters because tyres have become one of the key battlegrounds in the EV era. Electric cars are heavier than comparable ICE models, they deliver instant torque, and buyers are highly sensitive to range figures. In that environment, even a modest reduction in rolling resistance can have a meaningful effect on real-world usability. The tyre was the result of five years of research and used a dual-compound tread design with an Energy Passive Compound on the outer sections to reduce energy use and an Adaptive Grip Compound in the centre to improve grip on dry and wet roads. Michelin also fitted the concept tyres with integrated RFID chips for real-time monitoring and optimisation during the record attempt.

For drivers, the message is simple. Traditionally, choosing a sporty tyre meant accepting higher energy consumption. Michelin is trying to close that gap. In the case of modern EVs, where every kilometer matters, that could make the Pilot Sport 5 Energy especially relevant for premium electric models that need both grip and range.

The tyre is also promoted as suitable for fuel, hybrid, and electric vehicles, with a focus on comfort, quietness, and long tread life.

 

Michelin claims that the Primacy 5 Energy can deliver up to 6 percent fuel savings, up to 10 percent more EV range, up to €169 in fuel savings over the tyre’s life, and up to 70 km of additional range per charge for a car. The company also says the tyre offers an 8 percent improvement in wet braking performance, both when new and when worn, and positions it as the leader in longevity among premium summer tyres in its category.

 

For daily drivers, this tyre may prove even more important than the sportier Pilot Sport 5 Energy. Most EV owners are not chasing lap times. They want lower charging frequency, lower cabin noise, predictable wet-weather safety, and tyres that last. The Primacy 5 Energy is clearly built around those priorities.

Those figures underline how serious the development program was. These were not generic eco tyres fitted to a concept for marketing reasons. They were purpose-built high-speed, high-load tyres created to survive repeated 300 km/h running while still supporting energy efficiency.
