Accident-Free Day: UAE Waives Four Black Points for Safe Driving on First Day Back to School

As the academic year in the UAE kicks off on August 25, 2025, the Ministry of Interior, through the Federal Traffic Council, is launching its annual Accident-Free Day (A Day Without Accidents) campaign. The initiative rewards motorists who drive responsibly on this high-traffic day by deducting four black points from their licences—provided they sign an online pledge and avoid accidents and violations on the designated day.

What is Accident-Free Day?

This annual campaign, timed to coincide with the return of more than one million pupils to school nationwide, seeks to ease the inevitable traffic congestion that occurs as summer ends. In 2025, August 25 marks the first day of the new school year, making it an ideal moment for a safety initiative that unites drivers, parents, and authorities in a shared goal of safer roads.

How to Participate—and Benefit

Participating is simple:

  1. Visit the Ministry of Interior’s website.
  2. Log in using UAE Pass or another approved method.
  3. Sign the pledge committing to safe driving.
  4. Drive without committing violations or being involved in any accidents on August 25.

Those who fulfil the pledge will see four black points automatically deducted from their driving record by September 15, without the need to visit service centres.

Why It Matters

Black points are penalties assigned for serious traffic violations. Accumulating 24 points within 12 months can result in licence suspension or even revocation, with penalties escalating based on the severity of offences.

Beyond the benefit of reducing penalty points, the campaign promotes key safe-driving habits such as:

  • Wearing seatbelts at all times.
  • Adhering to posted speed limits.
  • Maintaining safe distances between vehicles.
  • Avoiding mobile phone use while driving.
  • Giving way to pedestrians and emergency vehicles.

Brigadier Engineer Hussein Al Harthi, Chairman of the Federal Traffic Council, has stressed that this initiative is essential for improving road safety, particularly as traffic increases during the school season. He has urged all members of the community—drivers and pedestrians alike—to help protect children returning to school.

Past Success and Public Response

In the previous year, over 300,000 motorists signed up for the campaign, demonstrating strong public support for road safety initiatives. The collective effort helps reduce traffic accidents and instil a culture of careful driving during high-risk periods.

What Drivers Need to Know

If you are driving in the UAE—whether in your own car or a rented vehicle—keep these points in mind:

Register early to ensure your pledge is recorded before the first day of school.

Expect higher traffic volumes near schools and residential areas on August 25.

Follow all safety recommendations to avoid violations and protect both your driving record and the safety of others.
